Though the MOCA North Miami remains closed, the museum has exhibited a monumental installation of the photojournalist Carl Juste’s I Am A Man outdoors in the museum’s plaza. Taken in 2008, the image features two Black men, one holding a sign reading “I am a man” in bold letters, and the other turned in profile. The men in the poignant black and white image are the sanitation worker Elmore Nickelberry and his son, captured 40 years after Nickelberry carried the same sign during the Memphis Sanitation Worker’s Strike following the wrongful deaths of two of his coworkers by unsafe working conditions.
