“Progressive Aesthetics” is the first museum survey in the U.S. of the late artist Michel Majerus, featuring more than 20 rarely exhibited works. Majerus was a pioneer in the creative exploration of the digital realm, and his practice addressed popular culture through a unique visual language, causing him to be considered one of the most significant artists of his time. The featured works span his practice from the 1990s leading up to his untimely death in 2002, demonstrating his use of subject matter like interpretations of capitalism, technology’s impact on culture, the myth of the painter, and art history. The survey at ICA Miami will encompass a number of oil and acrylic works, digital prints, two of the artist’s famed “L.A. Paintings,” and serial screen-prints appropriating the work of the iconic collaboration between Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, wherein Majerus considered himself to be a third collaborator.
