In Michael Armitage’s “You, Who Are Still Alive,” viewers are met with a suite of new and recent large-scale canvas compositions where elements of color, movement, perspective, and place are employed to create enthralling, surreal scenes. On view at Kunsthalle Basel through September 4, the subject matter explored by the Kenyan-British artist is widespread, inviting visitors into an exploration of themes like dreams, death, trauma, history, and beyond. On view, expect to find works like Warigia, looking at the legendary daughter of the East African Gĩkũyũ people; the severed Head of Koitalel, looking at the decapitation of the East African Nandi people’s leader in 1905; and Amongst the Living, which represents sacrificed animals, which morph into streams of color.
