Presented at the 2022 edition of Salone del Mobile, LOEWE has debuted the “Weave, Restore, Renew” initiative. Meant to highlight the importance of handwork and bringing new life to forgotten things, the house has invited artisans to create unique design objects by repairing and renewing broken ones or repurposing existing material. At the center of the installation, “Repaired in Spain” invited Idoia Cuesta, Belén Martínez, Juan Manuel Marcilla, and Santiago Besteiro for the task of mending 240 baskets from around the world (all of varying shapes, sizes, and functions) using leather strings. In “Coroza,” the ancient Galician technique of the same name sees a series of bags and baskets made from weaving together various natural fibers—almost to a sculptural effect. The presentation also includes a series of totes by the 2019 LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize Finalist Young Soon Lee, woven out of recycled newspaper, drawing on the Korean Jiseung technique, which traditionally employs fine strings of paper woven to create household objects.
