Shozo Shimamoto

Katy Donoghue

24 September 2020

This major presentation of works by the deceased artist Shozo Shimamoto at Cardi Gallery puts a focus on productions made later in the artist’s career. The work on view include a range of work, like those made from the artist’s “bottle crash” method, and others highlighting Shimamoto’s preference of considering the act of painting over the result. Shimamoto is also remembered for his part in cofounding the Gutai movement alongside Jiro Yoshihara in 1954, which resulted in publications like Guitai Manifesto and Banishing the Paintbrush.
