Giuseppe Penone: Drawings

Katy Donoghue

20 October 2022

Centre Pompidou presents “Drawings,” a sweeping exhibition of leading contemporary artist and member of the Arte Povera movement Giuseppe Penone. The show unveils part of Penone’s immense 2020 donation to the Musée National d’art Moderne: 241 drawings (out of 328) from 1967 to 2019. Known mainly as a sculptor, the artist’s drawings disclose a fiercely intimate approach inspired by philosophical reflection and man’s poetic relationship to nature. Included throughout the exhibition are associated sculptures from the Musée National d’art Moderne and a private Italian collection. Materials invaluable to the artist such as wood, stone, leaves, and bronze are displayed, as well as the exquisite use of graphite lead, ink, and watercolor. Much of the presentation is shown to the public for the first time, and gives a 360-degree look at five decades worth of extraordinary research, process, and creation.
