The 2021 edition of photo basel launches today with a VIP preview, open to the public from September 21—26. Returning to its home at Volkshaus Basel, the sixth iteration of the fair—under the care of artistic director Audrey Hoareau—features 40 international exhibitors bringing captivating photography from the past and present across the main presentation floor and special projects
New presenters include Berlin’s Robert Morat and Migrant Bird Space, Gowen Contemporary from Geneva, Galerie 193 and Thierry Marlat of Paris, Riga’s ISSP, and Gallery Bart from Amsterdam. Of these and the returning galleries, fairgoers should look out for highlights like work by the Zimbabwean artist Moira Forjaz presented by AKKA Project, images by Nikita Teryoshin with Galerie Koschmieder, photographs from the Dutch artist Lisandro Suriel, shared by Chrysalid Gallery, and Gallery Peter Sillem presenting work by Anastasia Samoylova.
Make sure to save time for viewing the special projects encompassed in this year’s fair. In the Vintage Cabinet, Pauline Geux has curated a selection of historic prints surrounding the sound dimension of photography. Presented with Samsung, Photo Basel’s first-ever NFT Cabinet will see a selection of digital photographic presentations. And other exhibitions to look for include an homage to the late photographer Arnold Odermatt, and the flooded art project, which features a selection of destroyed art in tribute to the recent, extreme flooding that has devastated parts of Europe.
