Pia Camil: Nidos y Nudos

Pia Camil’s exhibition “Nidos y nudos” (Nests & Knots) is named for the artist’s two new bodies of work, which were inspired by her relocation from Mexico City to the rural countryside at the onset of the pandemic. Exploring modernism-centric themes like US-Mexico relations, consumer politics, and feminized labor, the exhibition (open at Blum & Poe through August 15) features ten of the artist’s totem-like Nidos works, constructed from materials like concrete, mortar, and recycled newspaper, which look to the form of the termite nest. Also on view, the Nudos series is a suite of works on paper referencing the act of getting tied up through overlapping compositions using ink, oil stick, coiling, and smudged clay.
