Refik Anadol: Living Paintings

Jeffrey Deitch’s gallery space at 925 N. Orange Drive is presenting Refik Anadol’s “Living Paintings” from February 18—April 8. The artist’s first major solo show in the city, the works on view—a series of mesmerizing AI Data paintings and sculptures—follow the artist’s exploration of environments (physical, virtual, public, and multidimensional) in order to create works that are tied to their location of presentation, the state of California. At once poetic and futuristic, Anadol’s featured works employ data like wind speed, air pressure, and temperature from California’s national parks in order to train machine-learning algorithms, which then generate imagery directly related to the local data—which also happens to be the largest data set ever used in the making of an artwork. Also featured, viewers will find works like an iteration of the artist’s renowned traveling Infinity Room, which has been tailored to Los Angeles through specific data, and Pacific Dreams, where real-time data from the ocean creates an ever-changing media wall installation.
