Beginning September 10, James Cohan is showing “We send the wave to find the wave,” a vibrant exhibition of new works from Spencer Finch, on view through October 8. The presentation expands on the artist’s fascination with light, color, and the great paradox of human’s diverse impressions of the world around them. Within the gallery, either side of a wall bears the installation Bauhaus Light (Kandinsky’s Studio/ Klee’s Studio, afternoon effect), 2022. In this unique portrait, 22 light tubes recreate the lighting and color palettes found in Bauhaus artists Wassily Kandinsky’s and Paul Klee’s studios as beheld and documented in 2015 by Finch. In Color Notes (Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn) 2020-2021, the artist uses watercolor on paper to document fleeting yet unforgettable elements of the seasons.
