Top New York Hotels This Fall: Hotel Chelsea, Nine Orchard, and More

In celebration of New York Fashion Week and the art world's fall season kicking off, we’ve curated a selection of our favorite hotels to stay in throughout the city.

The New York fall art and fashion season is about to be in full swing. For those in town for NYFW and the art fairs and shows, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite places to stay throughout the city, from boutique hotels steeped in history to luxurious, award-winning new properties, like Nine Orchard, Hotel Chelsea, and more.

The Mark

Located at the corner of 77th and Madison, The Mark is a five-star hotel epitomizing the sleek luxury of the Upper East Side. French visionary Jacques Grange was inspired by the Art Deco movement when designing the property, resulting in its iconic black-and-white striped floors. The designer also commissioned special works by Karl Lagerfeld, Paul Mathieu, and Todd Eberle which continue to live in the hotel. The Mark is home to Caviar Kaspia, which serves eight different types of farm-raised caviar to pair with a glass of champagne or a shot of vodka. Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten helms the property’s other dining concept, The Mark Restaurant, which offers elevated takes on comforting dishes—burgers topped with black truffle, tuna tartare with ginger marinade—and 24-hour room service. Not to be missed is the ‘60s-inspired Mark Bar, which serves classic cocktails in a boldly lavish space outfitted with twinkling lights and cow-print couches.

Perhaps no hotel in New York has more impressive amenities than The Mark. Guests may take a trip through New York Harbor on the hotel’s 70-foot private sailboat, or enjoy a stylish chauffeured ride in one of the hotel’s pedicabs, which offer 24-hour private shopping access to Bergdorf Goodman. The property’s FEKKAI Salon offers blowouts, manicures, and pedicures; during the warmer months, The Mark operates a gourmet hot dog and popsicle stand.

What we love: Dining at Caviar Kaspia and having a drink at Mark Bar.

Hotel Chelsea

Following an intensive decade-long restoration, Hotel Chelsea reopened in 2022 and proved that it’s retained its historical glamor. There are legions of famous artists who doubled as tenants in decades past, and their work continues to hang on the lobby walls (often in lieu of rent). The lobby bar functions as the hotel’s living room, outfitted with vintage chandeliers, a grand piano, and original marble mosaic floors. House creations are named for former tenants, like the Viva Superstar, and classic libations are inspired by bars around the world.

This is a hotel that has the lived-in, intimate feel of an upscale apartment building. Rooms are equipped with original fireplaces and stained glass windows, rainfall showers and deep soaking tubs, and 400-thread count sheets. Wrought-iron balconies lean over 23rd Street, offering an up-close look at the iconic neon sign which hangs on the building’s façade. Upstairs is the spa, which includes a traditional Swedish sauna, aromatic steam showers, ice baths, cupping therapy, and high-performance facials, as well as the historic rooftop gym, which features state-of-the-art cardio and strength equipment amid 40-foot ceilings and skylights.

While embarking on the New York rite of passage that is staying at Hotel Chelsea, guests may dine at one of the property’s two restaurants. Since opening in 1930, El Quijote has offered Spanish food inspired by Basque and Valencian cuisine, with a signature mural depicting Don Quixote on one of its walls. Café Chelsea serves classic French dishes in a buzzy space known for its comté cheese ravioli and Chelsea Burger.

What we love: Having the chocolate souffle at Café Chelsea and luxuriating in the spa.

Crosby Street Hotel

Crosby Street Hotel sets itself apart from the minimalist, monochrome luxury properties that dominate lower Manhattan with ease. This five-star hotel is contemporary and quirky, lavished with refreshingly colorful decor and a mix of both new and vintage furniture; for an extra touch of comfort, bathrooms feature heated towel racks. Downstairs, guests can visit a spacious, leafy garden or a sumptuous guest-only drawing room with a fireplace. Not to be missed is The Crosby Bar, which offers afternoon tea as well as light sandwiches and soups. Remarkably, the hotel’s rooftop kitchen garden supplies the hotel with seasonal produce—heirloom tomatoes, squash, strawberries—and houses four chickens.

What we love: Having afternoon tea at The Crosby Bar and strolling through SoHo.

Nine Orchard

Nine Orchard took a bank, originally built in 1912, and turned it into one of the swankiest places to stay on the Lower East Side. During the arduous restoration efforts, the hotel took care to preserve the bones of the property, including the original vaulted bank ceiling which looms above the hotel’s cocktail lounge. The Swan Room offers pristine drinks amidst velvet booths; at the other end of the lobby is Corner Bar, where the steak au poivre and spaghetti pomodoro are both excellent. This 83,000-square foot hotel is cool and refined. Inspired by timeless New York apartments, rooms are identified by a number/letter combination and are outfitted with custom furniture made in downtown New York.

What we love: Ordering the pomodoro and a cocktail before heading upstairs.

The Fifth Avenue Hotel

Between its 19th-century mansion exterior, Murano glass chandeliers, and twinkling star-like ceiling lights, The Fifth Avenue Hotel feels a bit like a jewelry box. Rooms come in a rich, whimsical color palette of buttercup yellow and garden green, accompanied by pleated silk canopies and private terraces. Pagoda-style table lamps are to be found alongside custom wardrobes inspired by traditional Chinese cabinets. Downstairs, guests can find Café Carmellini—a hedonistic tribute to French and Italian cuisine which has been buzzy since its opening last fall, serving up thoughtful dishes like rabbit primavera and duck tortellini. Not to be forgotten is Portrait Bar, the sultry retreat whose cocktails highlight ingredients like hibiscus, chocolate, calamansi, and sesame. (Notably, the cheeseburger is excellent as well.) For those who are looking to stay a bit closer to Midtown, this property is as sleek and modern as it gets.

What we love: Indulging in a cheeseburger and a cocktail at Portrait Bar.

The Wall Street Hotel

The Wall Street Hotel was a much-needed addition to a neighborhood largely deprived of boutique hotels. The stylish and refined property earned a Michelin Key and was named “Best Hotel in New York City” by Travel + Leisure in its first year. Rooms feature blue velvet, deep soaking tubs, and sweeping watercolors inspired by oysters. Guests can practice asceticism at the 24-hour fitness center or opt for indulgence at La Marchande, the modern French brasserie helmed by Michelin-starred Chef John Fraser. They may drink a classic cocktail downstairs at Lounge on Pearl or take the elevator up to Bar Tontine, the hotel’s new rooftop space with a panoramic terrace.

What we love: Relaxing in your room’s deep soaking tub before heading up to Bar Tontine for a cocktail.

88 Wall St, New York, NY 10005

Pendry Manhattan West

Just steps away from Hudson Yards and Penn Station is Pendry Manhattan West, a luxurious new build bringing a bit of West Coast coolness to Midtown. The property is California-based Pendry Hotels’ second opening on the East Coast, bringing with it 30 expansive suites outfitted with floor-to-ceiling windows, tasteful mid-century modern furniture, and standalone bathtubs, as well as two restaurants, a cocktail bar, and a high-end coffee shop. For an added touch of hospitality, the hotel puts macarons and a pair of slippers on each guest’s bed during nightly turndown.

What we love: Having an in-room Peloton set up and soaking in the tub after your workout.
