Afro Basaldella: Afro 1950-1970

The Ca’ Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art in Venice presents “Afro 1950-1970,” a celebration of the works of Afro Basaldella.

April 21, 2022 - October 23, 2022

The Ca’ Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art in Venice presents “Afro 1950-1970,” a celebration of the works of Afro Basaldella. The exhibition, curated by Elisabetta Barisoni and Edith Devaney, comprises 45 works representative of the crucial years of the Italian artist’s production in close contact with the American art world, including drawings, archival materials, and original videos. This link, manifest in Basaldella’s characteristic merging of the European traditions of abstraction with the newly established Abstract Expressionist movement, contributed to the full development of his own visual language, which unites the intimate assimilation of Venetian painting and tonal color to synthetic cubism and early abstract influences. This interconnection between the Italian and American art scene is further suggested through works, letters and photographs illustrating Basaldella’s artistic connection to Arshile Gorky and personal friendship with Willem de Kooning.
