Shulamit Nazarian presents “Safe Haven,’’ an exhibition of new paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Wendell Gladstone. In this new series, the artist further explores his interest in surreal and psychologically charged spaces. Following the idea of a ‘haven,’ or a place of refuge, the exhibition raises the varying degrees in which tenderness and precariousness overlap. Gladstone’s paintings—often populated with humans, animals and hybrid forms—examine contemporary subjects of human connection, power, safety, isolation and instability, through notions of gazing and physical contact. By applying transparent layers of paint on a surface, Gladstone allows the viewer to see through one layer and into the next one, creating different scenes that can exist simultaneously.
