Whitewaller Miami 2019: What to See in the Miami Design District

Outside the fairs, be sure to save time to visit these top exhibitions, on view in the Miami Design District.

Sterling Ruby
Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami Design District
Now—February 2, 2020

The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA/Miami) will present the most comprehensive museum survey of work by Sterling Ruby, organized in conjunction with the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston. Ruby is known for exploring the role of the artist as an outsider. The exhibition begins with a series of the Dutch-American artist’s two-dimensional collages, drawings, and prints—mediums which he used earlier in his practice to delve into subjects like the nation’s prison-industrial complex. Spanning more than 20 years of Ruby’s career, the survey also features some of his renowned paintings and ceramics, as well as sculptural works like Monument Stalagmite/The Shining, which Ruby created in response to the scale limitations of ceramics, and creations across several other mediums including metal, fabric, and spray paint.

Trenton Doyle Hancock: I Made a Mound City in Miami Dade County
Locust Projects Design District
Now—February 8, 2020

For his exhibition “I Made a Mound City in Miami Dade County,” Trenton Doyle Hancock has transformed Locust Projects with a site-specific installation following the fantastic tales of his renowned character Torpedo Boy, a well-meaning superhero who is always out to save the Mounds from evil Vegans. Visitors are greeted in the gallery’s storefront with a display of Hancock’s Moundverse Infant dolls, which depict characters from the epic narrative. At the center of the exhibition, a towering ceiling-high sculpture beckons visitors inside, where they can view The Color Crop Experience—an animated story of the artist’s encounter with The Legend in the forest. Also included in the show are a selection of videos, hand-drawn pages from the artist’s upcoming graphic novel, The Moundverse, and a pop-up comic book store.

“From Day to Day”
de la Cruz Collection Design District
2019—2020

Inspired by Pier Paolo Pasolini’s 1957 poem “Diary,” the de la Cruz Collection’s annual exhibition, “From Day to Day,” features the works of nearly 50 artists. Including names like Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Glenn Ligon, Hernan Bas, Salvador Dalí, Alex Israel, Ana Mendieta, Rudolf Stingel, and Rashid Johnson, the works on view focus on issues that are relevant in the world of today and highlight relationships that will help give recognition to the voices of the artists. Founded by Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz, the 30,000-square-foot space was completed in 2009 as an extension of the de la Cruzes’ home, which they have opened to the public for more than 30 years as a means of making contemporary art more accessible.
