In 2014, Mariana Telleria was commissioned by the state to paint the outside of Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes Juan B. Castagnino in black. The transformation of the museum, a cultural icon in Rosario, Argentina, was met with confusion and upheaval by the public. Telleria’s performance piece, done anonymously, brought up discussions about vandalism, distribution of funding, and destruction.
For “Siembra” at kurimanzutto, Telleria self-archived every reaction to her 2014 piece, including tabloids, discourses on social media, newspaper articles, op-eds, and reader commentaries. The material has been converted into a user-graphic device that visitors can use to explore the effects of the Museo Municipal painted over in black.
kurimanzutto will also be featured in Gallery Weekend Mexico, taking place from November 5—7.
