Samara Golden: Guts

Katy Donoghue

14 February 2022

Inaugurating Night Gallery’s new space at 2050 Imperial Street is Samara Golden’s exhibition “Guts,” open through March 26. Existing in the realm of abstraction, Golden’s immersive installation is a form of visual poetry, engaging the viewer with an installation that has removed the necessity of things “making sense”—a quality we have all had to let go of in the past two years of uncharted territory. Golden’s titular work sits central in the warehouse-turned-gallery, taking the form of a skyscraper facade, accompanied by an illusory network of mirrors. To view the building’s interior, visitors must climb a set of stairs to a platform 12 feet off the ground. Once in the air, a shifting reality reveals the structure’s “guts” to be a dizzying collection of snakes, intestines, and other unexpected innards made from everyday objects.
