Tori Wrånes: Mussel Tears

Katy Donoghue

17 February 2022

The artist Tori Wrånes has harnessed the power of synesthesia—a condition which links senses like sound to color and form—using it to her advantage when fabricating physical works of art, which often begin with her own vocalizations. In “Mussel Tears” at Shulamit Nazarian, Wrånes has utilized this condition to present her audience with a show of sculpture, sound, painting, and performance that create a series of dreamlike narratives, born from the artist’s observations of society’s outcasts. Titled for memories of the Norwegian fishing village where Wrånes was born, the artist infuses in her fantastical storytelling with memories of her birthplace, crafting an unforgettable narrative around the mollusks that inhabit the waters.
