Gladstone Gallery has debuted two simultaneous presentations at its Chelsea galleries (located at 515 West 24th Street and 530 West 21st Street), featuring the work of the late artist Robert Rauschenberg. Titled “Venetians and Early Egyptians, 1972—1974,” the exhibitions (a collaboration with the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation) showcase how Rauschenberg’s practice contributed to the definition of post-minimalist sculpture and the importance of not adhering to others’ defined limits of what is considered art. The dual exhibitions feature works where the artist has completely disregarded prior separations between topics and practices like waste and conservation, artwork and everyday objects, and painting and sculpture—including works from his 1970s Venetian and Early Egyptian series respectively, and more.
