“KAWS:HOLIDAY” Visits a UNESCO Heritage Site

Today in Indonesia, KAWS and creative studio AllRightsReserved have unveiled the latest iteration of the traveling installation “KAWS:HOLIDAY” at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Prambanan Hindu temple complex in Yogyakarta. On display from 8 AM until 5 PM daily now through August 31, is the artist’s ACCOMPLICE character where the monumental figure is situated just outside of the majestic temple site. This marks the 10th stop of an ongoing worldwide tour, with support from local partner AKG Entertainment.

“I am honored to have my sculpture on display in Indonesia, where it can be enjoyed by the public and become a part of the vibrant cultural landscape of the country,” said KAWS. “Art has the power to bring people together and inspire meaningful connections, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to that through my work.”

The installation of KAWS:HOLIDAY offers a curious juxtaposition of heritage and contemporary art at its station on the outskirts of Prambanan—the country’s largest Hindu temple, constructed in the 9th century. Imagined here in a bubblegum pink vinyl, ACCOMPLICE’s enormous body measures nearly 150 feet long (the artist’s largest sculpture to date) and can be seen reclining in the grass with its white, gloved hands covering its face. The effect, when presented against the ancient ornate architecture, is quite surreal.

What is “KAWS:HOLIDAY”?

First launched in 2018, “KAWS:HOLIDAY” is a traveling initiative that sees the artist’s quintessential characters installed in monumental proportions at various public sites across the globe. The first time ACCOMPLICE was featured, it joined KAWS’s renowned CHUM—a Mickey Mouse-esque figure with signature Xs for eyes. It has since visited locations in Taipei, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Bristol, Singapore, Changbai Mountain, Melbourne, and even the stratosphere, with more to come in the future.

“‘KAWS:HOLIDAY’ has now reached its tenth destination,” said SK Lam, Founder of AllRightsReserved. “This epic artistic endeavor continues to delight and enchant, as we unveil our latest wonder: ‘ACCOMPLICE’, now gracing a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We invite fellow art enthusiasts to savor the beauty of the moment, and eagerly anticipate our next sojourn together.”

Celebrate with KAWS’s ACCOMPLICE Collectibles

Special for the Indonesian installation, the artist and AllRightsReserved have debuted a series of ACCOMPLICE collectibles. Available through the online shop at DDT Store, the collection includes small vinyl figures, plush toys, a mug, two versions of a crewneck, and a pink ACCOMPLICE paper lantern.
