Simultaneously opening this week at Perrotin Gallery in Tokyo and Hong Kong iare solo-exhibitions by KAWS (on view from March 22 through May 12 in Tokyo, and from March 26 through May 19 in Hong Kong). The shows serve as a celebratory return home for the American-born artist, as he built his career in Tokyo during the early 2000s. KAWS was also the first artist to present an exhibit at the gallery’s Hong Kong location six years ago.
Influenced by popular culture and the times in which we live, KAWS is easily recognized as one of the most relevant artists today. The multimedia artist is known for his use of worldly wit and sense of playfulness, and is held in high esteem for his colorful, larger-than-life sculptures and paintings.
In addition to the concurrent exhibitions, KAWS is also an honoree of this year’s fourth amfAR fundraising gala. Hosted in Hong Kong on March 26, the event honors KAWS, in addition to Cathy Lee, for extensive dedication to AIDS research. The gala will also feature an online bidding for one of KAWS’s paintings, CHUM, in partnership with Paddle8.
