Here Comes the Sun: Swarovski Collaboration with Fredrikson Stallard

Sarah Bochicchio

23 June 2014

Swarovski revealed its collaborative work, Prologue, on June 17 at Design Miami/Basel. Created with London-based designers Fredrikson Stallard, Prologue is Swarovski’s second large-scale installation to be revealed at the global design forum.

The work consists of a steel-framed, circular sculpture of 8,000 golden Swarovski crystals, suspended on a beam. Despite the simplicity of its shape, Prologue conveys abstract, yet powerful symbolism. Nadja Swarovski commented, “‘Prologue’ is a glowing symbol of life, and its power lies in its scale. Its compelling presence draws the viewer closer, allowing us to feel a primeval connection with the sun.”

Alluding to the circle of life and rebirth, this sun-like installation sways gently and reflects light upon the surrounding steely, gray walls. Stallard explained, “Prologue’s juxtaposition of heavy, raw, industrial steel with the sparkling luminosity of different shades of golden, precision cut crystal is the latest installment in the story of our collaborative vision.”

Previously, Swarovski and Fredrikson Stallard worked together on the Iris Collection (2011).
