Jim Jarmusch Directs Summer 2021 Saint Laurent Film

Yesterday, Saint Laurent celebrated its Women’s Summer 2021 collection with the debut of its film, French Water. Directed by the renowned filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, the picture features several high-profile celebrities and icons, drawing eyes to the cinematic nature of the presentation and the looks highlighted within it.

With artistic direction provided by the house’s designer Anthony Vaccarello, talents—including Julianne Moore, Chloé Sevigny, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Indya Moore, and Leo Reilly—appear shortly after a dreamy introduction of credits. At first, the picture punctuates the screen with a psychedelic backdrop, first with a purple kaleidoscopic floral pattern that spins. The lens then pans to a tablescape, with treats like cookies, champagne, and coffee in full view.

A waiter in shiny patent leather shoes gazes onto an open setting of mirrored doors, which open ever so often to reveal a celebrity that waltzes through the room. As the enter, they enjoy a delectable treat, walk off screen, then re-enter wearing a new ensemble. New guests arrive slowly, and each independently asks the waiter if he has seen her friends. He offers then water, and the pattern continues, as each guest fashionably outstays their welcome.

The dreamy scenes reel the viewer into scenes anew, complete with guests exploring books and twirling in circles solo, until they find each other at last. Like a true after-presentation party the guests join together to ask, “Where were you?” and exchange “I’ve been looking for you all night!” comments before they depart together. This time, they’re adorned in Saint Laurent, and of course, their matching pandemic face masks.
