Last Saturday, Mara Hoffman debuted her fall/winter 2016 collection at The High Line Hotel in Chelsea. Hoffman’s designs, angled to portray the evolution of “powerful female identity,” draw inspiration this season from icons throughout space and time, sampling from international niches the artist has visited. Bursting with bold colors and patterns, the collection provides a new, darkened take on the designer’s trademark prints.
Embroidery, beadwork, and velveteen touches coaxed out the provocative hearts of these prints, styled into an array of gowns, suits, and high-waisted pants. One black-and-white floral print’s pink blossom embellishments added a carnal edge to otherwise gentle, organic pieces. Other stand-out looks included a Persian rug-based gown and an ethereal series of draping tiger-print garments.
