Albert Watson: The Light Behind the Lens

On view at SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta is “Albert Watson: The Light Behind the Lens.” For the photographer’s first U.S. solo museum exhibition, an extensive archive of his 50-year career greets guests to works that highlight his distinctive style, heightened by the use of light and shadow. Since his career start in Los Angeles in the 1970s, Watson’s work has moved from fashion photography to portraiture, still life, and fine art, capturing some of the most iconic moments in time. His photographs and handmade prints have been shown in galleries and museums around the world, showing hundreds of images he’s captured for publications—including Vogue, TIME, Rolling Stone, and Harper’s Bazaar—and of icons like Andy Warhol and Kate Moss.

“I’ve always been driven by the pursuit of excellence in photography, but also by how I can improve every time I pick up the camera,” said Watson. “How can I make that next shot more powerful, more interesting, more beautiful, and most importantly, more memorable? For a younger generation of artists and photographers, that would be my most important advice: Never be fully satisfied with what you’ve accomplished. Always strive to improve and never lose your curiosity. Hopefully, these prints of some of my fashion photography will provide inspiration for them and pique their curiosity as they begin their own careers.”
