Angel Otero: “The Fortune of Having Been There”

Angel Otero
Angel Otero, "Lucky Mirror," 2020, oil paint and fabric collaged on canvas, 84 x 108 x 1.5 inches; courtesy of the artist and Lehmann Maupin, New York, Hong Kong, Seoul, and London.

Angel Otero’s “The Fortune of Having Been There” at Lehmann Maupin combines memories of his childhood with art historical references for this body of new work. The paintings on view look to several of Otero’s experiments across various styles, which he has explored throughout the last decade in his practice, including abstraction, figuration, and his signature oil paint skins. The resulting works feature recognizable motifs amid multifarious compositions with a frenzied feel, which are based on memories associated with specific objects.
