On view at Night Gallery is “Egg and Dart,’’ an exhibition of new fresco paintings by Anna Rosen. This series of paintings presents imagery in layered constructions that offer nothing but the false face, creating an experience of uncanny time travel for the viewer. Through illusory exteriors, images such as vessels, walls, frames and costumes appear in Rosen’s paintings, as unseen truths evoking containment, concealment and transformation. The exhibition title is informed by the egg-and-dart design, a style of ornamental motif in architectural mouldings named after symbols of birth and death. Limiting herself to the use of 4 colors—red, blue, yellow and green—the artist operates within terms of chromatic antipodes, with a color palette that speaks to polarity. Like the egg and the dart, Rosen’s new body of work makes graphic the rhythmic dissonance of life’s primal forces.
