Anselm Kiefer at Palazzo Ducale

Coinciding with the 59th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia invited the artist Anselm Kiefer to imagine an installation at the Palazzo Ducale, which will remain open through October 29. Titled “Questi scritti, quando verranno bruciati, daranno finalmente un po’ di luce” (roughly translating to “These writings, when burned, will finally cast a little light”), Kiefer’s installation fills the Venetian venue with monumental works responding to the ornate interiors of the historic space—which Kiefer has managed to fashion in a manner that feels as though his newer creations are right at home with their historic counterparts. Utilizing an amalgamation of materials like metal wire, zinc, shoes, fabric, straw, and resin, the artist’s presentation has been named for the words of the late Venetian philosopher Andrea Emo, with whom the artist found parallels in their ideologies.

“The mission of this great project is to understand the need for public spaces to bear witness to our time, to construct an epiphany of our contemporary era, and to put on stage the present and its universal values,” said Gabriella Belli, the Director of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezi.
