Günther Förg‘s inaugural solo exhibition “Appearance” at Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles is open to the public through January 9, 2022. On view in the South Gallery, the exhibition focuses on two generations of Förg’s “Gitterbilder” grid painting series. The works included in the show touch upon the artist’s deep art-historical roots and celebrate his approach to abstraction—a hallmark of his career spanning five decades. A not-miss highlight of the show is the German painter’s Untitled (1995) piece, which takes center stage in “Appearance.” Spanning nearly thirteen-by-twenty feet, the painting features a gray-toned background adorned with clusters of ochre, sage, rust, and charcoal cross-hatchings. The piece provides a look at his correspondence with Munch, and of his challenge with modernist techniques and principles.
