The Fondation Marguerite et Aimé Maeght presents “At the Heart of Abstraction,” an exhibition of 120 abstract works from 1945 to 1980 in the Fondation’s collection, on view through November 20. The show, curated by Yan Schubert, features works by Hans Hartung, Martin Barré, Simon Hantaï, Pierre Soulages, Georges Mathieu, Sam Francis, Joan Mitchell, Victor Vasarely, Alexander Calder, and Jean Tinguely, showcasing the development of non-figurative art from the gestural postwar years, to geometric abstraction, to experimentation with the very surfaces used through 1980. Through it all, the featured works showcase the enduring self-renewal and self-interrogation of abstract art.
