Bridget Mullen’s first solo show with Shulamit Nazarian, “Birthday” is a compilation of 32 intimate-sized paintings expressing emotions through abstracted figures and features. On view through August 8, the works’ use of color, marking, and abstracted forms leave viewers recalling faces and feelings they might have seen or experienced before themselves, though Mullen’s subjects are just outside of the realm of recognition. While there are no human faces or appendages in sight, viewers may feel as though they share a common ground with the subjects, as their furry, wiggly, squiggly forms permeate the linen canvases with sadness, frustration, boredom, surprise, and embarrassment.
