Last week in New York, Postmasters opened its debut presentation of the Chinese multimedia artist Chando Ao, “My I,” on view through January 22, 2022. Titled for Douglas Hofstadter and Daniel Dennett’s publication The Mind’s I, reflecting on the self and the soul, the show features a landscape of tools created to activate the viewer’s senses and connect with their inner “I.” Through interactions with the works, Ao helps his viewers to gain a higher awareness of their “I” when faced with objects like the floor-to-ceiling pipes of his Pole Chairs, a pair of robotic dogs, or their reflections imagined digitally in the three Mirror works.
