On view at Gagosian’s Paris gallery through September 22, Damien Hirst’s “Cathedrals Built on Sand” is a visually playful installation posing questions on the morality of the commodification of healthcare and society’s faith in drugs. The biggest installation of Hirst’s Pill Cabinets to date, these vast chromatic arrangements of the tiny medicinal morsels take on a new, heavier meaning in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and have been presented in conjunction with earlier works like the 1998 Prototype for Lies.
