Gagosian presents “cold mountain clay,’’ an exhibition featuring a series porcelain works by Edmund de Waal. Inspired by both Western and Eastern traditions, the artist couples a minimalist visual language with invocations of the written word and explores the act of collection as an artistic form. This recent body of work is inspired by Chinese monk Hanshan’s famous Cold Mountain poems, exploring time and monastic solitude. Inspired by Hanshan’s habit of writing on rocks, tree trunks and cave walls, de Waal’s new body of work was made through a process of inscription and effacement and layering, resulting in “fugitive poems’’ that reflect the haze of memory. In addition to this new series, viewers will find a selection of wall-mounted and freestanding works made in white or black porcelain, presented alongside elements of gold, alabaster, marble and steel.
