Emily Mae Smith: Harvesters

Choosing the unexpected form of a straw broom as her muse, Emily Mae Smith has suggested in her artworks the figure of a woman, captured in symbolic scenarios presenting ideas of still life, mythology, and portraiture by Belle Epoque masters. In her exhibition “Harvesters” at Perrotin—on view through December 18—Smith’s effeminate broom takes on new forms like a remake of Jules-Joseph Lefebvre’s La Vérité in The Grotto and the title work Harvesters, where she is seen lounging in a wheat field.
