The world renowned Italian designer and entrepreneur Enrico Marone Cinzano founded his namesake label in 2012, placing ethical and sustainable design at the heart of his deft practice. Cinzano’s mesmeric furniture has always been energized by Mother Nature’s bountiful and organic forms, utilizing locally-sourced and found materials to create sculptural works of art that boast minimal environmental impact. As a parade of fairs open in Basel this month, the visionary speaks to a wondrous collaging of historical and contemporary design, as well as the most charming spots to rest and recharge.
WW: What are you looking forward to in Basel in June during the fairs?
ENRICO MARONE CINZANO: I look forward to the conversations emerging at Design Miami.Basel this year. The play between historical and contemporary designs that are on display is always progressive and expressive. It leads me to question the notion of sustainability and its interaction with manufacturing, labor and the built environment. I am proud to be exhibiting my Rosa Tank Lamp at the fair in Friedman Benda‘s group presentation alongside some exciting voices; the curatorial approach at the booth allows me to drive a conversation about scale, perception and the utility of objects in the home—themes I often reflect on.
WW: What do you have your eye on at the fairs?
EMC: It is important to experience the new wave of emerging artists making their mark at Art Basel, Liste, and Design Miami/Basel. Sandra Poulson‘s work stands out. She’s leading an exciting conversation that speaks to youth and conspicuous consumption.
The Unlimited section of Art Basel also feels important.
WW: What are the exhibitions on your must-see list?
EMC: The Nigerian-born artist Toyin Ojih Odutola is having an exhibition at the Kunsthalle Basel; Toyin’s work is unique.
As ever, we have little time and much to do…
“It is important to experience the new wave of emerging artists making their mark at Art Basel, Liste, and Design Miami.Basel,” — Enrico Marone Cinzano
WW: Where are your go-to places to grab a bite or drink after the fairs or openings?
EMC: Visiting Hasenburg has become a ritual for me—it’s an excellent way to recharge with local cuisine. For a more laid-back atmosphere, Schnabel offers comforting Swiss home cooking. As for drinks, some charming bars along the Rhine can set the pace for the day or night ahead.
