“Future Histories” at SFMOMA is on view through May 23. Centered around archival photographs from lifestyle magazines and video projections that offer new perspectives on the past, the show presents works—like Do you hear me calling? Mama Mamama or What Is Black Power? by Theaster Gates and —that pay homage to the power of women and the Black experience through three decades of reworked images from magazines like Ebony and Jet. Other works in the show—like Cauleen Smith’s Sojourner—is revealed through a feminist reimagining of an unpublished image from a Life assignment in 1966. These pieces, among others, examine site-based research and collaborative performance to activate and transform space.
