IRVING PENN

Open at Cardi Gallery Milan from September 9—December 22, “IRVING PENN” is a comprehensive overview of the practice of one of the most renowned photographers of the 20th century, presented in collaboration with The Irving Penn Foundation. Filling multiple floors of Cardi Gallery, viewers will find images spanning the early 1940s—1990s, following Penn’s career trajectory from his mentorship under the photographer and art director Alexey Brodovitch, to his work documenting cultural imagery (like Early Hippies, captured in 1967), and his countless, iconic fashion editorials for renowned publications like Vogue. In addition to highlighting his artistic approach to fashion photography, for which he became best known, the presentation also encompasses an entire floor for works dedicated to Italy—including portraits of the country’s prominent figures (like the 1980 portrait Luciano Pavarotti and the 1962 Sophia Loren)  images captured in the country during World War II, and photographs taken on assignment with the writer Edmonde Charles-Roux.
