The first solo exhibition in Asia of work by Jack Whitten is on view through July 31 at Hauser & Wirth in Hong Kong. The show consists of rarely seen paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from the 1960s through 2010s. “I can build anything I want to. I’m not a narrative painter. I don’t do the idea or the painting being the illustration of an idea. It’s all about the materiality of the paint,” said Whitten. Whitten breaks through the conventional boundaries of painting and sculpture, combining geometric abstraction and found objects to shed light on the spiritual and metaphysical themes.
