“Joan Mitchell,” the American artist’s eponymous retrospective at SFMOMA, is on view through January 17, 2022. Co-organized with the Baltimore Museum of Art, the exhibition features over 80 distinguished works, rarely-seen early paintings and drawings, and a large-scale multi-panel piece from Mitchell’s later years. In addition to colorful paintings, some of Mitchell’s sketchbooks and drawings are also seen, as well as a not-miss selection of personal letters and photographs.
