In Joshua Hagler’s “Drawing in the Dark,” themes and imagery from the past year (like the COVID-19 pandemic and the birth of the artist’s first child) act as inspiration for this exhibition of new works. Open through May 8 at Cris Worley Fine Arts, viewers will find works where Hagler has transformed original sonogram photos beyond recognition by covering them in layers of mixed media and paint, as well as entrancingly detailed large-scale paintings—like Between Earth and Here, in which the artist began with blind contour sketches, created outdoors at night, in order to render a 10 x 16-feet abstracted scene suggestive of a wide-lens landscape image.
