Josué Mejía: First Scene

Katy Donoghue

7 February 2022

Open at Museo Jumex through March 13, Josué Mejía‘s exhibition “First Scene: Entre caballos de fuerza y caballos de vapor” takes the form of a symphonic museography telling the tale of characters from the 1932 ballet by Carlos Chávez, Horse-Power (H.P.). Produced with costumes and scenography by Diego Riviera, the original ballet examined the co-dependent relationship of North and South America and the exploitation of the working class that remains a result of international capitalism. In Mejía’s presentation, the artist follows his practice of creating counter histories and alternative narratives, utilizing this tactic in a musicalized story following Rivera’s visuals and the ballet’s characters, as they journey from Mexico, traveling north into the U.S. and ending in Philadelphia.
