"Kandis Williams: Eurydice"

Kandis Williams: Eurydice

Kandis Williams’s solo exhibition at Night Gallery highlights the artist’s performance and video work, Eurydice, which were made and presented between 2018—2020. Completed as a two-channel video work in 2021, the work (featuring footage of the performances) takes its name for the story of the daughter of Apollo, Eurydice, whose lover Orpheus is sent to rescue her from Hell. On view, Williams has explored ideas of spectatorship and agency demonstrated in the myth, using them as a channel to examine the Black figure as a symbol that has been diverted into a cycle of fetishization and erasure.
