Marnie Weber: The Sea Witch and Other Stories

Simon Lee Gallery presents an exhibition of recent works by Los Angeles-based artist Marnie Weber. Referencing folklore, fairytales, and myths deeply embedded in our collective memory, Weber creates dream-like works set in a realm unfixed in time. She creates uncanny worlds set between fantasy and reality, blending the carnivalesque, the bacchanalian, the mystical, and the absurd, thus inviting the viewer to explore the subconscious. Works on view include In Song of the Sea Witch, a theatrical new film in which a mysterious sea witch is threatened by discordant birds and Blooming Hollyhocks, one of Weber’s disorienting, mysterious and surreal collages. Exploring the loss of innocence, the community of living things, spiritualism, and the subconscious, the exhibition launches the viewer into a quaint, whimsical universe.
