The Vitra Design Museum’s “Memphis: 40 Years of Kitsch and Elegance” celebrates the anniversary of the designs of the Memphis group, which began opting away from the functional, industrialism prominent during its emergence in late 1980. Highlighting works by well known members of the group (like Ettore Sottsass, Michele De Lucchi, Nathalie Du Pasquier, and Michael Graves), the show demonstrates the playful, post-modern aesthetic of the design school which looked to celebrate the everyday, including a range of furniture, dishes, lamps, photographs, sketches, and more.
