Two years after its opening, El Espacio 23 returns with a new and improved iteration of its exhibition “Witness: Afro Perspectives from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection.” Organized by guest curator Tandazani Dhlakama of Zeitz MOCAA, along with Pérez Collection curators Anelys Alvarez and Patricia M. Hanna, the presentation explores themes like intergenerational trauma, systematic oppression, territory, and identity through a suite of new acquisitions and works from the collection, by artists like Cassi Namoda, Alexander Maxwell, Penny Siopis, Athi Patra Ruga, Suchitra Mattai, Takadiwa Mottat, Cinga Samson, and Ajarb Bernard Ategwa.
In “Mariano: Variations on a Theme,” six decades of paintings, drawings, and watercolors are on view, spanning Mariano’s career.
