Mimmo Paladino: The Sleepers

On view at Cardi Gallery in Milan is Mimmo Paladino: The Sleepers. The exhibition features an eerie installation of terra-cotta figures, seemingly curled up on the floor in dream. First made in the late 1990s and show at Poggibonsi in “Arte all’Arte,” they were later cast in bronze. Installed anew for this exhibition, 32 are lit by dim spotlights from above, experienced alongside a soundtrack of Brian Eno.

“The idea of assembling shapes as if they were modules recurs in Paladino,” said Demetrio Paparoni, author of the books published alongside the exhibition. “It should not be forgotten that the artist has on several occasions manifested an aptitude for creating works conceived as a set of fragments archived in his visual imagination. It is this attitude that led him to create artworks together with Sol Le Witt, Alighiero Boetti, and, last but not least, Brian Eno, artists who have always worked with a different concept of module and repetition.”
