Sam Gilliam

Pace Gallery in Hong Kong is presenting an exhibition of Sam Gilliam’s paintings at the gallery’s space in H Queen from July 22 through September 2. Gilliam, who is now in his eighties, is widely known as one of the great painters of postwar America. He emerged from the Washington, D.C. scene in the mid-1960s with works contributed towards Abstract Expressionism.

Alongside the artist’s iconic paintings from the postwar era, new works will be featured in the exhibition, reflecting Gilliam’s ongoing experimentation with beveled edge canvases. With attention to surface, alchemy and volume, they offer a rich combination of texture, materials, and composition. Gilliam’s approach to Abstract Expression involves methods such as folding, soaking, and staining canvas before applying thick layers of paint mixed with materials such as pure pigment, sawdust, tin shot and debris found on his studio floor.
