Musée des Arts Décoratifs celebrates the 1980s with “Années 80, Mode, design et graphisme en France,” on view through April 16. The sprawling presentation ranges from the election of French president François Mitterrand in 1981 to the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989, spotlighting now legendary moments in design, fashion, and graphic arts. On the wave of eclectic postmodernism, the exhibition displays over 700 works of furniture, fashion design, photographs, objects, posters, videos, and album covers. Innovative creators such as Olivier Gagnère, Elizabeth Garouste, Mattia Bonetti, Philippe Starck, and Martin Szekely are celebrated alongside game-changing fashion designers like Jean Paul Gaultier and Thierry Mugler. The show rejoices in the decade’s graphic designers and pioneers of audio-visual production, Jean-Paul Goude, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, and Etienne Robial, who created groundbreaking works during the height of modern advertising. Music is highlighted in the form of post-punk, hip-hop, and the emergence of iconic Parisian nightclubs. Designer Adrien Rovero created the riveting and effervescent scenography for the not-to-be-missed exhibition.
