On view now at La Fondation Louis Vuitton, in partnership with the Marmottan Monet Museum, is “Monet-Mitchell,” a celebratory dialogue between the works of artists Claude Monet (1840-1926) and Joan Mitchell (1925-1992), as well as a retrospective of Mitchell. The exhibition presents two extraordinary visions of the same combined landscape; Monet’s iconic Water Lilies were inspired by the water lilies of Giverny. Mitchell, while in the Vétheuil studio where Monet lived from 1878-1881, experimented with transposition, memory and feeling. The show includes 36 artworks by Monet and 24 paintings by Mitchell, expressing each artist’s intimate relationship with color, light, and the timeless magic of the natural landscape.
