On view at Kunstmuseum Basel until September 25, Carmen Giménez, Gabriel Dette, Josef Helfenstein, and Ana Mingot have curated a presentation looking at Pablo Picasso’s ongoing dialogue with the artist Doménikos Theotokópoulos (1541—1614), better known as El Greco. In “Picasso—El Greco,” viewers will find around 30 pairs of works by both artists, conceived in a presentation that outlines the ongoing artistic engagement between two masters who lived more than 200 years apart. Through a suite of works compiled from art spaces all over the world, viewers will be faced with Picasso’s relationship with one of his artistic idols, El Greco’s influence on Picasso’s work, and, subsequently, how the pair went on to influence European art history.
